Jayde with A Y Podcast

Through my podcast I touched on the topic of “What benefits and limitations are involved in using digital media to facilitate students learning and engagement”, focusing on equal negative and positive factors for both. I took this topic as I feel it’s very important as a preservice teacher to know both sides of the case. I wanted to be able to touch on real life factors and experiences from my placement and my past history of digital media within my own schooling life.

To get ready for this podcast I watched Henrik, S (2016) ted talk which gave me an insight into preparing the youth of technological development in the years to come. Giving teachers a good insight as to what skills might be obsolete in a couple years’ time, and what we should be educating the future generation on to thrive in a technologically advanced world. This lead me on a path of looking at traditional way teachers normally teach during my podcast and stating we need to re-evaluate that with the evolution of technology. I also looked at an article by Joy P (2015) that went in depth about social media for learning and teaching that. This article took a deeper look into social media platforms that can be manipulated and used for a teaching platform, which can create a comfortable environment which encourages collaboration which the exchanging of ideas. Through my podcast I touched on the social media I’ve used through education systems such as twitter, Facebook and blog posts to future this argument.

Looking at the Creative Commons Licensed sourced music I felt they were a little young and hard to set the mood for the subject I was talking about. I decided to do my research and came across NoCopyrightSounds which is a record label dedicated to representing electronic pop music. I ended up taking the bridge from one of their songs “Cradles (NCS Release) and used it as my introduction as it was easy to fade into for my podcast. I not only used it as my introduction but also at the end of my podcast as well, this bought it all together and I felt it made it more professional and signature of my “Jayde with a Y” podcast.

One of the challenges I faced with accepting my own voice on a podcast, not being able to back in up with constant music in the background of someone else speaking was hard to overcome. Another issue I faced was my podcast sounding very dull. When I first recorded it, I found it was very boring to listen to, this is when I decided to look into different music options to start to which helped change the whole mood of the podcast. I decided to take a fun, radio presenter outlook going into the second recording, I decided on a name “Jayde with a Y”, and threw in personal experiences when explaining a point. I found by doing this made not only my voice sound more genuine but it was a lot easier to listen to. Through this assignment I’ve learnt self confidence, which will be extremely valuable when completing any media driven work in the future. I’ve also learnt that they way I will be teaching now wont be the same as how I will be teaching in 10 years time, I will have to grow with the technology and digital media and adjust my teaching based on those.

Influencer Tells All?

I’m not new to social media, I go way back to the Bebo days of sending your crush your one heart for the day and when Myspace had top friends. I wouldn’t call myself a veteran but I’ve seen a lot and signed up to every social media platform with the hopes it’ll be the next “big thing” …. introducing Instagram.

So, I got introduced to Instagram in 2012, when it started getting some traction. It got sold to Facebook for some crazy amount and I didn’t want to miss out. I made a profile and thankful was responsible enough to brand myself well and use my full name. At this stage, it’s just my school friends and I using it, just posting for the sake of looking cool, under the desk selfies in class, got my bellybutton pieced that’ll give me so good street cred. For a good comparison of how the app once looked check out my tweet bellow.

So that’s where I started and this is where I am now. Just over nine thousand followers, a better camera and a consistent theme running, it’s safe to say I attract a broader crowed these days. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t claim to be an ‘influencer’ I’ve never received payment for any promotions but I’ve had my fair share of companies using me in their marketing. So I guess this is the story of how my online identity started…

So, in 2017 I was approached via email to do my first ever collaboration with a teeth whiting brand, I had about three thousand followers and they had five hundred thousand so I was interested in what they wanted from me. The email started off with “I’m always looking for new promoters for our international brand HiSmile. We really love your page and believe you have a beautiful smile that would fit the brand and feel of our product perfectly!”, all I could think was thank god I had braces for three years.

I obviously replied to the email accepting the collaboration and they sent back a booklet called the “Influencer Handbook”.  The booklet started off telling me that if we were reposted by them it’s a good way to network, connect and expand our following (they weren’t lying this was true). In order to be reposted the booklet also showed examples of photos that have been reposted so we could try and stick with the theme. A whole page of captions that we could use because god forbid we have any creativity in this collaboration. The booklet also goes on to discuss the importance of a good background in a photo where the inspiration was the Eiffel Tower and some beach holiday, I would be a little concerned if you were whiting your teeth on the beach or in Paris out and about so I stuck to what I know best and what my bank account could afford, my room. Due to signing no confidentiality agreement i’ll post the booklet bellow to see how ridiculous this got.

Being my first collaboration I wanted it to be perfect. I waited for a sunny day, did my makeup just right, hair curled, hey if Kylie Jenner was being sponsored by this brand you best believe I was going to do a good job. I got a good enough photo and worked wonders on my editing apps, making sure it fits my theme but also theirs and waiting for the notification that they reposted it as well. Days go by, nothing until one morning I woke up. Just a casual five hundred plus followers, they reposted it… do I like it, do I comment on their post I don’t know what to do. I was freaking out, they just sent my selfie out to five hundred thousand people. The post ended up getting over four thousand likes and I ended up gaining over seven hundred new followers from one photo, since then have offered to collaboration again.

So, the whole experience, I didn’t try the product once. Reading the guideline booklet back again there’s no expression of how the product works or the before and after result that they care about so much on social media. It just shows that “Social media has amplified the effects of peer recommendations, as it empowered consumers to share their opinions and experiences” (M Veirman, 2017), the company doesn’t care about the product, they care about the person who is holding their product in the photo, how much interest and followers they will get from that person. Hey it started my online identity so I shouldn’t really be complaining!

That’s all for now and once again,

F45 A CULT?

Is F45 The Best Kind of Cult?

Have you ever wonder what it’s like to join a cult? I don’t mean that kind of cult, how about the F45 cult?

You’ve finished the warm up, the timer is counting down, the music is pumping and you hear the buzzer… Its time to do burpees and not just a couple, were talking a whole minute worth. You can’t catch your breath, you look up and the timers only at 30, sweat is dripping down and your partners not stopping. It might not sound like the best way to start your Monday morning but believe me you will be on top of the moon by the time you finish.

By now if you haven’t got it yet F45 is a high intensity functional fitness that goes for 45 minutes. Every class is different and has different time, sets and exercise which keeps it interesting. Z Williams states that “the F45 workout schedule looks madly exciting; its website is like an ice-cream counter, tons of different classes with zingy names – Brooklyn, Panthers, Hollywood, Romans” We’re not talking a normal gym setting, it’s a mixture of the dancefloor at Bond and a gym in one.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday are cardio classes these are focusing more on using your body weight to work out with limited equipment. This is where you’ll burn the Quarter pounder your got from maccas on the way home from work last night. You might want to throw up half way so maybe check where the bathrooms are before starting your class (you’ll thank me later)

If cardio really isn’t your thing don’t you worry we have Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday for resistance so you can turn that burger into muscle. It’s there where we take things a little slower, there’s no running around, you won’t need to do burpees but you will need to flit heavy. By the end of these classes you’ll be able to put on a couple layers of tan and get on the stage of a body building competition.

If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea how about a mix of resistance and cardio on a lovely Saturday morning with their very own resident studio DJ, and yes, I said a DJ what kind of gym has a DJ oh yeah that’s right F45 does.
